Move In Recycling Guidelines
This Fall and over just a few days, thousands of students will arrive on campus to move into the residence halls. Many of the items that they bring from home are transported in cardboard boxes, and once the boxes are unpacked they are no longer needed. In an effort to recycle the huge amount of cardboard generated, University Housing Facilities Management and Residence Life work with University Facilities to recover as much of this material as possible for recycling and to keep the cardboard out of the landfill. Students, parents, and staff members actively participate in this effort and make the program a success year after year.
University Housing and USC Recycling, in cooperation with the City of Columbia, work diligently to ensure maximum results are achieved with the cardboard collection efforts. This partnership, along with the tremendous recycling efforts of students, parents, and staff members, results in the collection of an average of 12.75 tons (25,500 lbs) of cardboard during opening weekend and yields a savings of some $8,000 in landfill and handling fees.
Move-In 2008 Recycling Guidelines
1. Please empty and flatten all cardboard boxes.
2. Bring the flattened cardboard boxes to the blue cardboard dumpster or trailer located outside of your building. Directional signs are posted on each floor and in the lobby of your building, or you can ask your RM or other staff members for assistance. Please be sure to stack or place all the cardboard boxes neatly into or adjacent to the dumpster or trailer.
2. Please do not place plastic wrap, foam packaging, or other refuse or foreign material into the cardboard dumpster.
3. Newspaper, mixed paper, and boxboard can be placed in the Mixed Paper Recycling container located at the recycling center on your floor or within the lobby of your building.
4. Plastic bottles and aluminum cans can be placed in the Aluminum and Plastic Recycling container located at the recycling center on your floor or lobby. There will be recycling barrels located near bottled water sites outside of selected buildings for plastic water bottles.
5. A trash bag is provided to each student for non-recyclable waste, and can be placed in the trash receptacle located on each floor or in lobby and building trash receptacles.
Thank you for your assistance and efforts to help make Move-In 2007 a success!
