Technology Information

Can’t wait to get moved in so you can "instant message" your best friend back home? Well, you better make sure you’ve got everything you need for your computer before you come to campus so you can get online - ASAP! The University of South Carolina’s Technology Service Provider is located at http://www.sc.edu/studentIT

To connect to the Internet and University of South Carolina network from your residence hall room, you’ll need:

  • Ethernet Card (3Com recommended for best network performance)
    Desktops: 10/100
    Laptops: PCMCIA 10/100 (Please check prior to purchasing to see if your computer has a built-in Ethernet card.)
    MacIntosh with built-in Ethernet (Standard on all Macs made after 1996)
  • 25 foot Cat 5e Patch Cord to fit RJ-45 Data Jack
    Students assigned to Capstone, Wade Hampton or Patterson Hall need a 50-foot patch cord.
  • Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator
  • Virus Protection - Available free-of-charge when you first sign-on to the University of South Carolina network
  • Virus Scan for Windows
  • Virex for MacIntosh

Please make sure you have all of the necessary components to connect to the University of South Carolina network before you arrive on campus. It will make your move to campus much easier and save you from making unnecessary trips to the store.

Under NO circumstances can a telephone line splitter device be used for multiple computer connections. Use of the devices can result in permanent disconnection of Internet service.

But don’t forget, these computer specifications are so you can get the best performance out of the University of South Carolina network. Be sure to check with your college for more specific computer requirements necessary to complete your schoolwork.

University Technology Services’ technicians will be available in residence halls during Move-In Weekend if you have any problems getting your computer connected to the Internet, please visit your residence hall's area office or the University Housing IT office for more details..

Q. Will my roommate and I both be able to go online at the same time if our room only has one data jack?

A. Yes. A 5-port 10/100 Ethernet switch will be provided by University Housing. Please visit your residence hall's area office for more details.
