Sophomore September

Sophomore September is a month long program dedicated to helping second-year students adjust to their second year at USC and feel welcomed and connected. Sophomore September will consist of 20 events that involve food, fun, prizes, and sharing of resources and discussion key to the second year at Carolina. Events are designed for second-year students at USC but are open to all students.

Sophomores who attend eight of the twenty events will win a free t-shirt. Sophomores who attend twelve of the twenty events will win a t-shirt and another great prize! Only sophomore students are eligible to win prizes.


Sophomore students can get a Sophomore September punch card at any of the first several events. Pick up a sophomore punch card and have it signed by a member of the OSE staff at each event. For the CareerFest, Service Saturday and the ACE session/Out to Lunch/ event there are special instructions for getting attendance, please see below.

ALL students will need to swipe their Carolina Card at events, so please have it with you!

  1. Welcome Back Carnival
    Tuesday, August 25th
    11am-2pm, Greene Street
    Rain date: September 3rd

    FREE food from Jimmie Johns, Papa Johns, Insomnia Cookie and  more! Carnival games and food! Bungee run, Joust and punt, pass and kick inflatables. Information from the Office of Student Engagement, Study Abroad, Student Success Center, Office of Pre-Professional Advising, Career Center, USC Connect, Undergraduate Research and more.   2. Community Service Fair

    Come and meet Columbia nonprofit agencies, as well as student service organizations at Carolina, to how  to get involved and give back!

  3. Literacy Fair

  4. Preparing for Leadership Workshop : USC Connect including Graduation with Leadership Distinction
    Thursday, September 3rd
    3pm,  RHUU 205

    21st century leadership is based on solving complex real world problems in an informed way.  How will you prepare yourself to take on these challenges? In this workshop you will learn concrete ideas and skills to help you get the most out of your time at Carolina.  We will also explore how you can use the experiences you have at Carolina to become a leader in your field. Hosted by USC Connect

  5. Football Viewing Party

    Free food, music, ONE LOYALTY POINT and lots of fun at this alcohol-free viewing party before the game against UNC!. Hosted by SAPE

  6. Hip Hop Wednesday
    Wednesday, September 9th
    11am-2pm, Greene Street

    Greene Street comes alive with contemporary and ol’ skool hip hop music while students network and learn about the many opportunities to get involved with diversity activities on campus. Hosted by OMSA!

  7. Cool Down
    Thursday, September 10th
    11am-2pm, Greene Street

    Rain Date September 16th
    Cool down in the infamous Cola heat with a free SNOW CONE! Information about resources around campus that can help with the sophomore year will also be available. Honor 9/11 Day of Service by writing a card to a first responder or veteran! Hosted by Student Engagement

  8. Study Abroad Fair
    Monday, September 14th
    10am-3pm, Russell House University Union Ballroom

    Meet with representatives from Study Abroad and various providers about opportunities to study away from USC! Hosted by the Study Abroad Office

  9. Discover Columbia Fair
    Monday, September 14th
    11am-2pm, Greene Street

    Meet with local merchants to help get connected with the greater Columbia community. Rain date: September 23rd.  Hosted by Off-Campus Student Services.

  10. Wellness Week at the Farmers Market
    Tuesday, September 15th
    9:30am- 1:30pm, Greene Street

    Check out all of the health and wellness resources available on campus at the Wellness Week fair at the Farmers Market. Learn more about Student Health Services, Campus Wellness and Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention & Prevention, as well as other campus partners and all they provide students. Get food samples from campus dietitians, giveaways from wellness partners and much more!   11. How to Pay the Bills
    Tuesday, September 15th
    6pm, Student Success Center, Thomas Cooper Library- Mezzanine level

    Move on campus for the first time? Have a tighter budget that last year? Chat about how to pay the bills and balance your budget with financial literacy advisors! Hosted by the SSC.

  12. Service Saturday
    Saturday, September 19th
    Arrival at 8:30am
    RSVP required!!

    Join us as we come together to serve at different community agencies throughout Columbia. Transportation and lunch are provided! Hosted by Leadership and Service Center. RSVP at:  http://www.sa.sc.edu/leadershipandservice/service-saturday/

  13. How to Date Your Major
    Tuesday, September 22nd
    6pm, University Advising Center (Close Hipp Building)

    Thinking about changing your major? Come chat with cross-college advising on how to get started! Hosted by the SSC.

  14. CareerFest/ S.E.T. Fair
    Tuesday, September 22nd
    12pm-4pm, Columbia  Convention Center                     
    Employers will meet with students about potential job and internship opportunities with their companies. Come dressed to impress and prepared with your most updated résumé! A shuttle service will run from campus to the Convention Center. For more information visit the Career Center’s website. Hosted by the Career Center
    **Please bring a flyer or handout from the event as proof of attendance to the OSE office when turning in the punch card at the end of the Sophomore September program.
  15. Sustainability Showcase
    Tuesday, September 22nd
    6:30pm-8:30pm, Honors Residence Hall Main Floor

    Explore interdisciplinary research related to sustainability and learn how sustainability fits into your major, current projects students are working on, and how to conduct your own research. Hosted by the Office of Sustainability

  16. Choose Your Own Adventure with Undergraduate Research!
    Getting Started Workshop: Wednesday, September 23rd, 3pm Gambrell Hall 150-PC lab

    Pick whichever option fits for where YOU are! Interested in learning more about Undergraduate Research and what it means, come to the Sophomores Getting Started  in Research Workshop! Or, are you already doing research and want to learn what to do next? Come to the Magellan Scholar Workshop!   17. Diversity Dialogue Workshop
    Thursday, September 24th
    7pm, Honors Residence Hall 110

    Join the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs for a Diversity Dialogue about, “Sweet Tea and Southern Hospitality: Regionality as a Difference.” Participants will examine and reflect the regional differences here on USC’s campus and how that affects student interactions. Join for dinner and discussion ! Hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.

  18. Mutual Expectations Workshop with Academic Advisors
    Tuesday, September 29th
    11:30am-1:00pm, Capstone Campus Room

    Students sit down together with academic advisors to discuss expectations of each other in the academic advising relationship. Students and Advisors can enjoy an open dialogue and facilitated conversation over a free lunch! An RSVP is required for this specific event. Hosted by Student Engagement and the Center for Teaching Excellence

  19. The Engagement Speed Circuit
    Wednesday, September 30th
    Capstone Campus Room, 5:30-7pm

    Race around the circuit to chat with different campus offices and find ways to get connected and engaged with the campus community! Free food and GREAT giveaway prizes! Hosted by the SSC and OSE.

  20. Participate in ACE Coaching or Out to Lunch!
    August 25th- September 30th On Your Own Time
    Students are encouraged to make use of these three FREE programs from the Student Success Center! Schedule and complete an appointment with an ACE Coach at 777-1000 OR make use of the Out to Lunch program and take a professor or advisor out to lunch for FREE!     *Please bring proof of attendance when you drop off your sophomore punch card and we will check it against the SSC records.

Bring completed punch cards  to the Office of Student Engagement in Patterson Hall by Friday, October 16th  to collect prize(s).
