Sophomore September

Sophomore September is a month long program dedicated to helping second-year students adjust to their second year at USC and feel welcomed and connected. Sophomore September will consist of 12 events that involve food, fun, prizes, and sharing of resources and discussion key to the second year at Carolina. Events are designed for second-year students at USC but are open to all students. Students who attend six of the twelve events will win a free t-shirt. Students who attend eight of the twelve events will win a t-shirt and another great prize! Onl y sophomore students are eligible to win prizes.


Sophomore students can get a Sophomore September punchcard at any of the first several events. Pick up a sophomore punch card and have it signed by a member of the OSE staff at each event. For the CareerFest and the ACE session/Out to Lunch/Financial Literacy event there are special instructions for getting attendance, please see below.

ALL students will need to swipe their Carolina Card at events, so please have it with you!

  • Welcome Back Carnival
    Wednesday, August 27th
    11am-3pm, Greene Street
    Rain date: September 2nd

    FREE food from Jimmie Johns, Papa Johns, Insomnia Cookie and EarthFare! Carnival games and food! Bungee run, Joust and punt, pass and kick inflatables. Information from the Office of Student Engagement, Study Abroad, Student Success Center, Office of Pre-Professional Advising, Career Center, USC Connect, Undergraduate Research and more. Hosted by Student Engagement

  • Study Abroad Fair
    Thursday, September 4th
    10am-3pm, Russell House University Union Ballroom

    Meet with representatives from Study Abroad and various providers about opportunities to study away from USC! Hosted by the Study Abroad Office
    *Stop by the OSE table outside of the Russell House Ballroom to get your sophomore punch card stamped!

  • Football Tailgate
    Saturday, September 6th
    Two hours before kick-off, Gamecock Village

    Free food, music and lots of fun at this alcohol-free tailgate before the game against ECU!. Hosted by SAPE

  • Cool Down
    Thursday, September 11th
    11am-2pm, Greene Street

    Rain Date September 18th
    Cool down in the infamous Cola heat with a free SNOW CONE! Information about resources around campus that can help with the sophomore year will also be available. Honor 9/11 Day of Service by writing a card to a first responder or veteran! Hosted by Student Engagement

  • Discover Columbia Fair
    Tuesday, September 16th
    12pm-4pm, Columbia Convention Center

    Employers will meet with students about potential job and internship opportunities with their companies. Come dressed to impress and prepared with your most updated résumé! A shuttle service will run from campus to the Convention Center. For more information visit the Career Center’s website. Hosted by the Career Center
    **Please bring a flyer or handout from the event as proof of attendance to the OSE office when turning in the punch card at the end of the Sophomore September program.

  • Dare to Dream: How You Too Can Change Your Major
    Tuesday, September 23rd
    6pm, TCL 412

    Thinking about changing your major? Come chat with cross-college advising on how to get started! Hosted by the SSC.

  • Mutual Expectations Workshop with Academic Advisors
    Wednesday, September 24th
    11:45am-1:00pm, Russell House Ballroom

    Students sit down together with academic advisors to discuss expectations of each other in the academic advising relationship. Students and Advisors can enjoy an open dialogue and facilitated conversation over a free lunch! An RSVP is required for this specific event. Hosted by Student Engagement and CTE

  • How to Pay the Bills
    Wednesday, September 24th
    Location and time TBD

    Move on campus for the first time? Have a tighter budget that last year? Chat about how to pay the bills and balance your budget with financial literacy advisors! Hosted by the SSC.

  • Diversity Dialogue Workshop
    Thursday, September 25th
    7pm, Green Quad Learning Center

    Join EMPOWER and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs for a Diversity Dialogue titled, “What’s Your Socioeconomic Status?” Challenge yourself to think about how socioeconomic status influences your life. Participants will examine and reflect the SES differences here on USC’s campus and how that affects student interactions. Join for dinner and discussion ! Hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.

  • The Engagement Speed Circuit
    Tuesday, September 30th
    Capstone Campus Room, 5:30-7pm
    Race around the circuit to chat with different campus offices and find ways to get connected and engaged with the campus community! Free food and GREAT giveaway prizes! Hosted by the SSC and OSE.

  • Participate in ACE Coaching, Financial Literacy Appointments or Out to Lunch!
    August 27th- September 30th On Your Own Time
    Students are encouraged to make use of these three FREE programs from the Student Success Center! Schedule and complete an appointment with an ACE Coach or a Financial Literacy Consultation at 777-1000 OR make use of the Out to Lunch program and take a professor or advisor out to lunch for FREE!     *Please bring proof of attendance when you drop off your sophomore punch card and we will check it against the SSC records.

Bring completed passports to the Office of Student Engagement in Patterson Hall by Friday, October 17th to collect prize(s).
