Upperclassmen Pre-Medical Community

The Upperclassmen Pre-Medical Community is a living and learning community of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are preparing for application to medical, dental, optometry or veterinary school. A partnership between University Housing and the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, the community is designed for students who want the synergistic benefit of living with fellow students with similar career goals, are interested in having a valuable experience volunteering in a health care setting, and would like to mentor first-year students who are also on their road to medical school.

Opportunities for Involvement
Students living in the Upperclassmen Pre-Medical Community have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities designed to support their development as health professionals, such as:

  • Volunteering a minimum of three hours each week with a medical organization or facility
  • Bi-weekly Community meetings to discuss volunteering experiences and hear from experts in medical professions about topics related to their work
  • On-going mentoring of a first-year pre-medical student to advise on topics such as class selection and general college life
  • Serving on the leadership team that governs the community (chair positions exist for Records, Mentoring, Service, Attendance, Finance, Public Relations and Academics, as well as two meeting moderators)
  • Field trips that are both social and educational in nature

Is the Upperclassmen Pre-Medical Community for You?
Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are committed to pursuing work in the medical field and have 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible to apply to this community.

How to Apply:
To be considered for admission to the Upperclassmen Pre-Medical Community, students must submit both a completed Housing Application and a supplemental application for the Community. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by February 1, 2008. Please submit your general Housing application online at https://vip.sc.edu. A fifteen-minute phone interview will be conducted once applications have been reviewed. By completing the learning community application linked below, the Upperclassmen Pre-Medical community becomes your first housing choice and supercedes other housing preferences previously indicated. It is not necessary for your roommate to be a Pre-Medical Community student. However, priority is given to approved Pre-Med students. We can only accommodate other students based on bed availability. Because space is limited, you may not be placed into the Community initially but may be put on a waiting list for a space as it becomes available. While on the waiting list, your housing assignment will be made based on preferences noted on the standard housing application/contract.
