Teaching Fellows Community
Are you a South Carolina Teaching Fellow? Would you like to live with other students who are interested in education? There is a specific on-campus living and learning community designed to enrich the educational environment for first-year students like you who are selected as South Carolina Teaching Fellows. A collaborative effort of the College of Education and University Housing, the Teaching Fellows Community is developed specifically with the education student in mind. These services include access to academic support, including math and writing tutoring, computer support, and increased contact with faculty from the College of Education.
Opportunities for Involvement
- Designated sections of University 101 (The University Experience) for education majors: In addition to regular U101 content, students will be introduced to the Educational Technology Center (ETC) to develop an awareness of materials and technologies available for use in K-12 settings.
- Conversations About Education: Monthly meetings for members of this community to discuss issues and problems affecting education with upper-class students, faculty, and community leaders
- Regular contact with Faculty: Teaching Fellows will meet and talk with faculty and staff on a regular basis in a variety of settings, such as a Faculty Member Social
- Special events and activities planned to involve students in all aspects of campus life, including Career Center and service learning
- Students are also encouraged to initiate activities through residence hall student committees
- A dedicated listserv for Teaching Fellows to enhance communication between Fellows and with the Teaching Fellows Campus Director and help students develop a network of peers
Is the Teaching Fellows Community for You?
The Teaching Fellows Community is limited to students who have been accepted into the South Carolina Teaching Fellows Program. All South Carolina Teaching Fellows are encouraged to live in the Community. Education majors not selected as Teaching Fellows may apply to live in the Tomorrow’s Educators Community. Female Teaching Fellows will be housed in Patterson Residence Hall and male Teaching Fellows will be housed in McBryde Residence Hall.
How to Apply:
To be considered for admission to the Teaching Fellows Community, students must submit both a completed Housing Application and a supplemental application for the Community. Please submit your general Housing application online at https://vip.sc.edu. By completing the learning community application linked below, the Teaching Fellows community becomes your first housing choice and supercedes other housing preferences previously indicated. It is not necessary for your roommate to be a Teaching Fellows Community student. Because space is limited, you may not be placed into the Community initially but may be put on a waiting list for a space as it becomes available. While on the waiting list, your housing assignment will be made based on preferences noted on the standard housing application/contract.
