Annual Scholarships Offered by University Housing

Each year University Housing offers two $500 scholarships to students who are active leaders in the residence halls: the James R. “Red” Smith University Housing Scholarship and the Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina Memorial University Housing Scholarship. Applications must be submitted no later than Monday, March 31, 2008 at 5 p.m. Recipients will be notified in mid-April.

The Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina Memorial Scholarship

The Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 at the University of South Carolina by the parents of Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina as a way of remembering these students’ outstanding leadership contributions to the University of South Carolina Residence Hall Association. Melinda and Lawrence were engaged to be married when they died shortly after their graduation from the University of South Carolina.

During their tenure at the University of South Carolina, Melinda served the Towers Government for two years as Vice-President and Lawrence served for a year as the Residence Hall Association President, after being the Towers Government Treasurer for two years. Both were valuable leaders in the University of South Carolina residence hall community.

To be eligible for the scholarship a student must meet the following criteria:

2. Must be actively involved in a leadership role in the residence halls.
3. Have a permanent residence outside of the state of South Carolina.
4. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Congratulations to Alexandra Boardman and Lauren Flinn, recipients of the 2008 Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina Memorial Scholarship.

James R. “RED” Smith Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was developed in memory of Mr. Smith, who worked for University Housing for many years. “Red” as many called him, took special interest in students, especially those who became involved with University Housing, whether working as Residence Assistants, Desk Assistants or Resident Hall Association officers.

Mr. Smith worked in Housing in the Towers Area as an Area Manager for many years where he often spent time after normal working hours talking with students, offering them his help and advice whenever possible. He encouraged them to be active in their community, not only on campus but in the surrounding community as well.

To be eligible for the scholarship a student must meet the following criteria:
1. Must be a University of South Carolina student, assigned to campus housing currently and for the following academic term.
2. Must be in need of financial assistance.
3. Must be making satisfactory academic progress.
4. Must meet the University’s general scholarship requirements.
5. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Special consideration will be given to students who:
a. Are in the sophomore, junior, or senior class.
b. Are active in University Housing operations and activities.

Congratulations to Cordell Simmons and Daniel Houlis, recipients of the 2008 James R. "Red" Smith Memorial Scholarship.
