Green Quad
Green Quad
The Green Quad is the place where sustainability and concern for the environment come alive for USC students. Residents live in a healthy and comfortable “green building,” monitor their own resource consumption, and participate in the programs of the Green Quad Learning Center, including films, speakers, service projects, special courses, and other events. The Learning Center is particularly supportive of student-initiated projects and programs.
The Green Quad serves as a model and advocate for sustainability on campus and in the community, promoting collaborative relationships among students, faculty, staff, and community members to explore the changes required to create a sustainable society. Green values and a holistic perspective guide all aspects of programs, operations, and facilities, creating a unique “green bubble” within which students are able to begin or continue their journey toward a more sustainable lifestyle.
Green Learning Community
When applying to live in the Green Quad, you have the option of becoming a member of the Green Learning Community, a smaller group of 25-30 students who desire a more cohesive community dedicated to experimenting with "green lifestyles" and group initiatives to promote sustainable living. Applicants who are interested in being part of the Green Learning Community receive priority consideration for living in the Green Quad.
Students in the Green Learning Community live together on the same floor and have the opportunity to initiate and participate in their own special programs. Members attend community dinners, participate in field trips to places and events of interest, and have informal meetings with faculty members, visiting scholars, and activists. Some recent projects include: a community organic garden, recycling campaigns, environmental chemical awareness programs, and field trips to Congaree National Park, Five Leaves Farm, and Earthaven Ecovillage. These activities are all included in the one-credit course members of the Green Learning Community register for each semester (UNIV 290).
If you have any questions about these options for living at the Green Quad, please contact David Whiteman, Green Quad Faculty Principal (whiteman@sc.edu or 777-2093) or Jason Craig, Program Coordinator (777-1994). Also, visit our website at http://www.GreenQuadCommunity.org.
How To Apply to the Green Learning Community?
To be considered for admission to the Green Learning Community, students must submit both a completed Housing Application and a Green Learning Community Application. Space is limited. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by February 1, 2008. Please submit your general Housing application online at https://vip.sc.edu. By completing the learning community application linked below, the Green Learning Community becomes your first housing choice and supercedes other housing preferences previously indicated. Because space is limited, you may not be placed into the community initially. If this happens, you will be put on a waiting list for a space as it becomes available. While on the waiting list, your housing assignment will be made based on preferences noted on the standard housing application/contract.
