First-Year Pre-Medical Community

Becoming a physician, dentist, optometrist, or veterinarian is more than a hope or a dream—it is a calling. Hard work and perseverance will be required throughout your undergraduate education to reach this goal. Medical schools require strong academic and medical entrance examination (MCAT) performance. Health-related community service, shadowing, and work experience will also enhance your application. University Housing and the Office of Pre-Professional Advising have developed the First-Year Pre-Medical living and learning community for students who want assistance preparing for academic success in the pre-medical curriculum. If you aspire to be a health care provider, we hope that you will consider applying for this program.

Opportunities for Involvement
The Pre-Medical Community offers students access to an array of academic support services including math and writing tutors, computer labs, study sessions, and opportunities to interact with medical professionals, faculty, and staff from the Office of Pre-Professional Advising. Special activities planned for this year include:

  • A ten-part lecture series with medical school faculty and other professionals
  • Panel discussions about current trends in the medical field
  • Field trips that are both social and educational in nature, such as Halloween at Palmetto Baptist Hospital
  • Study groups tailored to specific science courses
  • Community service opportunities in the field of health care
  • Many other opportunities for meaningful involvement and leadership

Is First-Year Pre-Medical Community for You?
This program is for highly motivated first-year students with a minimum 3.0 high school G.P.A. and/or a 1000 SAT who are serious about pursuing careers in the medical field. Students in the program are selected from across the country from various educational backgrounds.

How to Apply:
To be considered for admission to the First-Year Pre-Medical Community, students must submit both a completed Housing Application and a supplemental application for the Community. Please submit your general Housing application online at https://vip.sc.edu. By completing the learning community application linked below, the First-Year Pre-Medical community becomes your first housing choice and supercedes other housing preferences previously indicated. It is not necessary for your roommate to be a Pre-Medical Community student. Because space is limited, you may not be placed into the Community initially; however, you may be put on a waiting list for a space as it becomes available. While on the waiting list, your housing assignment will be made based on preferences noted on the standard housing application/contract.
