French Language House
The French Language House is a living and learning community for sophomore, junior, and senior students majoring or minoring in French, or for students who have taken or are currently enrolled in French courses. Student residents of the House should have a strong interest in French culture and in speaking the language, or be native French speakers. This Community, made possible through a partnership between the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, and University Housing, is ideal for students interested in an immersion experience without going overseas, or as preparation for study abroad in a French-speaking country.
Opportunities for Involvement
A variety of academic initiatives and community development opportunities will be available for residents living in the French House. Examples of these initiatives include but are not limited to:
- Planning cultural and educational programs for House residents and the greater campus community (movies, conversation hour, French dinners/events, guest speakers, etc.)
- Creating Field Trips to regional French cultural events (museum exhibits, films, dining out, etc.)
- Developing Study groups
- Increasing opportunities for faculty-student interaction
- Offering peer tutoring services
- Providing daily interaction with a fluent, live-in native speaker
- Creating opportunities for Community Service
Is the French House for you?
Students who desire to grow in their use of the French language and understanding of French culture should consider applying for this Community. The French Language House will be located at 820 Henderson Street, which features apartment-style living with 4 students per apartment. The House is conveniently located adjacent to the BA Building and Gambrell Hall, and one street over from Columbia and Capstone Halls.

How to Apply?
To be considered for admission to the French Language House, students must submit both a completed Housing Application and French House Application. Space is limited. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by February 1, 2008. Please submit your general Housing application online at https://vip.sc.edu. By completing the learning community application linked below, the French Language House becomes your first housing choice and supercedes other housing preferences previously indicated. It is necessary for your roommate to be a part of the French Language House. Because space is limited, you may not be placed into the French Language House initially. If this happens, you will be put on a waiting list for a space as it becomes available. While on the waiting list, your housing assignment will be made based on preferences noted on the standard housing application/contract.
