Faculty Involvement in the Residence Halls

University Housing encourages a broad spectrum of faculty involvement in our residence halls. We believe faculty-student interaction is inherently valuable. Therefore, we have designed opportunities that both respect a faculty member’s time and support their teaching and research. Below is a list detailing the types of opportunities we provide.

  • Faculty Principals:
  • The Faculty Principals of the Capstone Scholars program, Preston Residential College, and the West Quad Living and Learning Center, represent a collaborative partnership between University Housing and the Provost’s Office. In general, faculty principals spend half of their time focused on developing academic initiatives and engaging students in a particular living and learning community and the other portion of time with their home academic department. Faculty principals generally agree to serve for 2-4 years depending on the type of learning community.

  • Community Scholar Program

  • Supporting Faculty Research: We are actively looking for opportunities to support faculty research and teaching. The attached document outlines just a number of the ways University Housing can support you. Research and teaching opportunities(.pdf)

  • Faculty Associates: Faculty who desire to mentor students or become more involved in the day-to-day life of residents can volunteer to become Faculty Associates. Faculty Associates agree to participate in a variety of academic and social initiatives hosted in a specific residence hall. For example, in Preston Residential College, faculty associates dine with Preston residents once a week and attend a variety of academic and cultural events throughout the academic year.

  • Residence Hall Classrooms: Classrooms have been established and furnished in Columbia Hall, Capstone, Maxcy, Preston College, Sims, East Quad, South Quad, and West Quad, providing space for over 80 sections of various undergraduate and graduate classes. All classrooms have a television, DVD, VCR, overhead projector and Internet connection. See http://www.housing.sc.edu/rsl/classrooms.html for more information.

  • Out to Lunch: The Out to Lunch Program is designed to promote faculty and student interaction outside the classroom setting. Students can pick up an Out to Lunch ticket at any University Housing area office and take their professor to lunch for free at a campus dining facility. University Housing and Sodexho Dining Services pay the cost of the faculty member’s meal and the students pay for their own meal with their meal plan, Carolina card, or cash. See http://www.sc.edu/ace/otl.html for more information.

  • Residence Hall Presentations: We encourage our residential student staff members to invite faculty members in to a hall to speak on a variety of topics such academic success, academic advising, or an area of their expertise or personal interest. Recent topics have included: Nano-technology, Politics and Pizza, Financial Management.

  • Recognition Events: University Housing recognizes the outstanding involvement of faculty and campus partners by providing a number of awards and recognition events throughout the year. Together with University 101 University Housing co-sponsors the John N. Gardner Inspirational Faculty Award, which recognizes exceptional faculty for their engagement with residential students. The award is given in honor of Gardner who was a distinguished professor emeritus who served as director of University 101 for 25 years. University Housing also honors an Outstanding Campus Partner for their collaborative efforts in serving residential students. Students with a 3.75 or higher GPA are honored for their academic achievement at our Academic Excellence Reception early in the spring semester. Faculty friends are invited to celebrate their students’ success.
