Departmental Information
University Housing promotes academic success by creating a positive living and learning environment for students. We provide programs, services, and facilities for residents to grow and develop in many aspects of their lives. We are committed to enhancing the quality of life among residents by providing comfortable, affordable, well-maintained housing, along with initiating opportunities for involvement and leadership. We are committed to creating a community that values individuals and encourages good citizenship through support of the Carolinan Creed. These efforts are consistent with the mission of the University of South Carolina-Columbia campus and the Division of Student Affairs and Alumni Services. Our mission is accomplished through programs and services which encompass Academic Enhancement, Resident Student Learning, Administration and Facility Management.

Qualifications
A Desk Assistant must be a student at the University of South Carolina, have at least at a 2.00 University of South Carolina system cumulative GPA, be in good judicial standing and have no criminal record, be able to effectively communicate with others, and be able to prepare legible, complete, and concise reports.

Responsibilities
1. Attend all training workshops and scheduled staff meetings.
2. Enforce all University and Housing policies and procedures.
3. Report situations that may jeopardize the safety of the residence hall to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
4. Keep assigned work area clean.
5. Monitor all individuals entering a residence hall to ensure that only residents and their guests are permitted in the building.
6. Maintain order and appropriate behavior in the lobby.
7. Arrive at least five minutes early to discuss instructions with the person you are relieving and to be briefed on shift change duties when the residence halls open.
8. Never leave the desk unattended and stay at the desk until relieved of duties from the next scheduled Desk Assistant.
9. Be accountable to any Housing staff member that makes reasonable requests of Desk Assistant.
10. Respond appropriately to any job-related requests by residence hall staff, and complete duties as assigned.

Supervision
Depending on the desk location, the Desk Assistant may be supervised by a Residence Life Coordinator, a Residence Hall Director, or an Assistant Residence Life Coordinator. The Assistant Director for Residence Life oversees all administrative processes for the housing area.

Work Hours

  • Front desks are staffed by Desk Assistants from 9:00 AM until 12 midnight, seven days a week.
  • Desk Assistants can work up to 20 hours per week. (This may be higher in the summer.)
  • Availability to work early mornings, early evenings, late nights, and weekends is expected of all Desk Assistants.
  • Desk Assistants should plan breaks and holidays in a manner which allows them to remain until the residence halls close for the holiday breaks and resume their duties when the residence halls reopen.
