Academic Success Initiatives
Academic Centers for Excellence (ACE)
University Housing’s Academic Centers for Excellence enhance students’ academic success through study skills consultations, after-hours writing consultations, math tutoring, and online services such as the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI). ACEs are located in several residence halls.
Academic Excellence Reception
The Academic Excellence Reception will be held Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 5:30pm in the Russell House Ballroom. This reception honors all residential students who have a 3.75 or higher cumulative GPA.
Academic Recovery ACE Session
At the beginning of the spring semester, residence life professional and graduate staff hold private meetings with residential students who had academic difficulties during the fall semester to help them connect with appropriate academic support resources and their academic advisors.
Academic Success Presentations
University 101 instructors, residential staff members, and other leaders on campus can request that a ACE Academic Success Coach present on a variety of topics, from time management to notetaking to exam preparation.
Classrooms
Classrooms have been established and furnished in many residence halls, providing space for over 80 sections of various undergraduate and graduate classes.
Out to Lunch
Out to Lunch, sponsored by University Housing and Carolina Dining Services, allows students to take a professor to lunch for free using a ticket picked up from a University Housing office.
Pre-Advising Meetings
Prior to the advising period each semester, University of South Carolina academic advisors from various departments hold informal pre-advising meetings in residence halls to answer students' questions about registering for classes, changing majors, and course requirements.
Student Success Initiative
This program, which includes intentional discussions and plans developed between residential student staff members (SSMs, RMs, PCs) and individual students twice a semester, enables University Housing to know, connect, monitor, and refer students on a more personal basis.
University Housing Scholarships
Each year, University Housing offers two $500 scholarships, the Melinda Quiring and Lawrence Nettina Memorial Scholarship and the James R. “Red” Smith Memorial Scholarship, to students who are active leaders in their residence halls.
