Cancellation Stipulations Fall 2008/Spring 2009
Cancellation of the Contract Prior to the Start of the 2008 – 2009 Academic Year
1. For New Freshmen, New Graduate Students and New Transfer Students (All Students New to the University of South Carolina)
(a) June 1, 2008: If notice of cancellation is received by University Housing on or before this date, the contract is cancelled with no additional charge, and the $100 advance payment is refunded.
(b) After June 1, 2008: The contract is legally binding, and students are obligated to pay rent for the entire academic year unless they fail to enroll.
Note: New Incoming Freshmen are required to live on campus for an entire academic year.
Note: University Housing residence hall contracts are NON-TRANSFERABLE to the Greek Village.
2. For Current Undergraduate and Graduate Students, Co-ops and Former Students Returning
(a) April 1, 2008: If notice of cancellation is received by University Housing on or before this date, the contract is cancelled, and the $100 advance room payment is refunded minus any indebtedness to the University. Refunds, if applicable, will be sent in the form of a check to the permanent address on file within 4 – 6 weeks.
(b) April 2, 2008 to June 1, 2008: If notice of cancellation is received by University Housing on or between these dates, the contract is cancelled, but no portion of the $100 advance room payment is refunded. In addition, students will be charged a $500 cancellation fee.
(c) June 2, 2008 to August 20, 2008: If notice of cancellation is received by University Housing on or between these dates, the contract is cancelled, but no portion of the $100 advance room payment is refunded. In addition, students will be charged a $1,000 cancellation fee.
(d) August 21, 2008: On or after this date, the contract is legally binding, and students are obligated to pay the entire academic year’s rent unless they fail to enroll. If a student’s plans change and he or she re-enrolls after canceling, the semester charge will be added back to his or her account. There will be no refund of University Housing monies during the last six weeks of a semester. If any collection fees are assessed in the process of obtaining unpaid housing charges, the student will be responsible for the payment of those collection fees in addition to the unpaid housing charges.
Cancellation of the Contract After the Start of Each Semester of the Academic Year
3. For New Freshmen, New Graduate Students, New Transfer Students (All Students New to the University of South Carolina), Current Undergraduate and Graduate Students, Co-ops and Former Students Returning
(a) The contract may be terminated after the start of each semester only for the following reasons: withdrawal from school; marriage (no more than four weeks prior to the wedding date); or, circumstances determined by the University to be sufficiently extenuating as to warrant cancellation (documentary evidence will be required).
(b) Any student qualifying for cancellation under paragraph 3(a) will forfeit the $100 advance payment and prorated rent for the days of the semester that housing is held in reservation by that student, PLUS a $200 cancellation fee.
(c) If 3(a) or 3(b) does not apply, the contract may also be cancelled by paying 40 percent (40%) of the academic year’s rental fee.

Cancellation of the Contract at the End of the First Semester (Fall 2008)
4. For New Freshmen, New Graduate Students, New Transfer Students (All Students New to the University of South Carolina), Current Undergraduate and Graduate Students, Co-ops and Former Students Returning
(a) The contract may be terminated at the end of the first semester without penalty for the following reasons: graduation; withdrawal from school; ineligibility to continue enrollment due to a failure to meet academic requirements; failure to enroll a second semester; co-oping second semester; or, participation during the second semester in anything required by the University that takes the student away from the main campus (documentary evidence is required). If notice is received by University Housing on or before November 1, 2008, $50 of the $100 advance payment will be refunded minus any indebtedness to the University.
(b) The contract may be cancelled at the end of the first semester with a $200 cancellation charge for the following reasons: marriage; notifying University Housing after November 1, 2008 of circumstances mentioned in 4(a); or, circumstances determined by the University to be sufficiently extenuating as to warrant cancellation (documentary evidence will be required).
(c) If 4(a) or 4(b) does not apply, the contract may also be cancelled at the end of the first semester by paying 40 percent (40%) of the second semester’s rental fee.

5. For New Freshmen, New Graduate Students and New Transfer Students (All New Students to the University of South Carolina for Spring 2009 Only)
(a) December 1, 2008: If notice of cancellation is received by University Housing on or before this date, the contract is cancelled with no additional charge, and the $100 advance payment is refunded.
(b) After December 1, 2008: The contract is legally binding, and students are obligated to pay rent for the entire semester unless they fail to enroll.
6. For Current Undergraduate and Graduate Students, Co-ops and Former Students Returning (All Students New to the University of South Carolina Housing for Spring 2009 Only)
(a) December 1, 2008: If notice of cancellation is received by University Housing on or before this date, the contract is cancelled, and the $100 advance room payment is refunded minus any indebtedness to the University. Refunds, if applicable, will be sent in the form of a check to the permanent address on file within 4 – 6 weeks.
(b) December 2, 2008 to January 2, 2009: If notice of cancellation is received by University Housing on or between these dates, the contract is cancelled, but no portion of the $100 advance payment is refunded.
(c) January 3, 2009 to January 11, 2009: If notice of cancellation is received by University Housing on or between these dates, the contract is cancelled, but not portions of the $100 advance payment is refunded. In addition, students will be charged a $200 cancellation fee.
(d) January 12, 2009: On or after this date, the contract is legally binding, and students are obligated to pay the entire academic year’s rent unless they fail to enroll. If a student’s plans change and he or she re-enrolls after canceling, the semester charge will be added back to his or her account. There will be no refund of University Housing monies during the last six weeks of a semester. If any collection fees are assessed in the process of obtaining unpaid housing charges, the student will be responsible for the payment of those collection fees in addition to the unpaid housing charges.
