New Incoming Freshmen
When Room Assignments Are Made:
- All NEW incoming freshmen students who apply for housing by May 1 are guaranteed housing. All Living and Learning Community applications should be postmarked by April 1. Historically, we are able to place all new freshmen that apply for housing through the first week of August.
- New incoming freshmen students who have applied for housing by May 1 will be able to access their housing assignment at https://vip.sc.edu by early July.
- Assignment information will include your residence hall building, room number and telephone number, as well as roommate contact information. We strongly encourage you to contact your roommate to get the relationship off to a positive start. (Please note that roommate information is subject to change pending student cancellations.)
How Room Assignments are Made:
- On May 2, applications are sorted into student status categories, by receipt date of housing application payment. Freshmen are assigned with other freshmen unless space is restricted.
- University Housing does not guarantee to assign a specific roommate to share the room, but will attempt to honor specific requests of this sort whenever possible. In order to maximize your chances, students MUST mutually prefer one another and both students MUST have paid applications on file prior to students receiving a room assignment. The assignment will be based on the residence hall preferences listed on the application received first.
- If the first hall you (and your roommate, if applicable) list as preferred is “full” when we get to your “turn,” we will proceed to the next residence hall listed. The process is continued until all assignments are made.
- If desired, and based on space availability, room changes are easy to accommodate after assignments are posted on VIP. You may request a room change online through the VIP UCHOOSE option. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee changes before residence halls open.
How to Cancel your Application for Housing:
- A student who wishes to cancel a request for housing must do so through VIP. Simply return to your original application and select the REQUEST APPLICATION CANCELLATION button. Please read the Stipulations Related to Cancellations and Refunds before submitting a request.
- Students may also check the status of a cancellation request periodically through VIP.
