New Incoming Student Cancellation Deadlines and Stipulations

Cancellation of Contract Before the Start of the Academic Year (Aug. 19, 2006)

June 30, 2006 - Students who do not enroll and give written notice prior to this date are eligible for a $100 refund of the advance payment.
July 1, 2006 - August 19, 2006 - If written notice of NON-ENROLLMENT cancellation is received by the housing office on or between these dates, the contract is cancelled, but no portion of the $100 advance payment is refunded. Students who are not required to make a $100 advance payment will be charged $100 upon cancellation.
After August 1, 2006 - Students who sign contracts after August 1, 2006 are obligated to pay the entire academic years rent unless they do not enroll. If a student's plans change and he or she re-enrolls after canceling, the semester charge will be added back to his or her account.

Cancellation of Contract After the Start of the Academic Year (Aug. 13, 2006)
The contract may be terminated after the start of each semester only for the following reasons:

  • Withdraw from school
  • Marriage - No more than four weeks prior to the wedding date
  • Circumstances determined by the University to be sufficiently extenuating as to warrant cancellation
    - For these circumstances documentary evidence will be required.

Any students qualifying for cancellation will forfeit the $100 advance payment and will be billed a prorated amount for the days of the semester that housing is held in reservation by that student.

Upper class transfer students (Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors) may cancel for any reason and buyout the terms of their contract for 40% of the remaining value, PLUS prorated days since halls open. New incoming Freshmen are required to live on-campus for an entire academic year.

Students who fail to notify the housing office of their decision not to attend the University of South Carolina by the end of the first day of classes will forfeit the advance payment of $100 and will be charged a $200 "no show" cancellation fee, PLUS prorated days since halls open.

Note: $45 application fee is non-refundable
University Housing residence hall contracts are NON-TRANSFERABLE to the Greek Village.


Continuing-Currently Enrolled Student Cancellation Deadlines and Stipulations

For students who remain enrolled in the University, The Housing contract is for two semesters. For students who remain enrolled but wish to “break” their contract, the following terms apply:

  • Cancellation on or before April 1: $100 refund
  • Cancellation between April 2 - June 1: $500 contract cancellation fee; forfeiture of $100 advance room payment
  • Cancellation between June 2 - August 18: $1,000 contract cancellation fee; forfeiture of $100 advance room payment
  • Cancellations after August 19: 40% of the remaining contract value, PLUS prorated days since halls opened; forfeiture of $100 advance room payment

Note: $45 application fee is non-refundable
University Housing residence hall contracts are NON-TRANSFERABLE to the Greek Village.

Students who do not enroll at the University of South Carolina must notify University Housing, in writing, of their cancellation. The following terms apply and refer to the date University Housing receives written notification:

Fall Semester

  • By June 1 - $100 advanced room payment forfeited
  • June 2 - 1st fall class day: $100 cancellation fee, PLUS prorated days since halls opened; forfeiture of $100 advance room payment
  • 2nd class day - November 1: $200 cancellation fee, PLUS prorated days since halls opened; forfeiture of $100 advance room payment.

Spring Semester

  • By November 1 - $50 refund of advance room payment
  • November 2 - End of semester: $200 cancellation fee, PLUS prorated days since halls opened; forfeiture of $100 advance room payment
  • Academic Suspensions - Students on academic suspension DO NOT receive a refund of the $100 advance room payment. All other prepaid rental fees will be refunded in full.
  • No Shows and Other Cancellations - Students who fail to notify University Housing of their decision NOT TO ENROLL AT the University of South Carolina by the end of the first day of classes will be charged a $200 cancellation fee, PLUS prorated days since halls opened; forfeiture of $100 advance room payment

May Session/Summer Student Cancellation Deadlines and Stipulations

May Session Cancellations:

  • By April 15: No penalty
  • April 16 to May 8: Cancellation fee of $25
  • After May 8: Cancellation fee of $50 PLUS a prorated amount for the number of days the space was assigned since the halls opened for May Session.

Summer I Cancellations:

  • By May 15: No penalty
  • May 16 - May 28: Cancellation fee of $25
  • After May 28: Cancellation fee of $50 PLUS a prorated amount for the number of days the space was assigned since the halls opened for 1st Summer Session.

Summer II Cancellations:

  • By June 15: No penalty
  • June 16 to July 2: Cancellation fee of $25
  • After July 2: Cancellation fee of $50 PLUS a prorated amount for the number of days the space was assigned since the halls opened for 2nd Summer Session.
  • No Shows: Students who fail to notify University Housing in writing of their decision NOT to return to the University of South Carolina by the end of the first day of classes for which they have requested housing will be charged a $100 cancellation fee.
